Can you believe we made it to Spring?? I don't know if I've ever been happier to see mud season, ruts and all! We are also excited to get baseball rolling, if you need us we'll be at the shop or at a local baseball field soaking it all in. Go Vikes!!

Last month the shop had an exciting new arrival.....our Technician Tony had a beautiful baby boy, welcome to the family kiddo! Be sure to congratulate him the next time you come to the shop and see him.

This warmer weather ushers in Vermont's mud season and we're destined to have a good one with all of the snow melt that's happening. If you find yourself on the highway with a very shaky car odds are good your wheels are caked in mud. Call us to schedule an appointment for us to confirm that's the issue and address any others that the ruts and potholes may be causing. Going to a car wash is not sufficient and many times can cake the mud in further, not to mention if we have freezing temps that night it can then turn what was just mud into cement. We're happy to put it up on the lift and clean it all out for you so you can head on down the road shake free! It'll also be a great time to switch over to your summer tires. Be sure to call soon though, we'll be filling up quickly!

We hope you are reading this with sun shining down on you and in a very comfortable temp my friend, if not, head outside when you're done reading this and get some fresh VT air. Happy Spring!!

Spring Maintenance Goes Beyond Oil Changes: How to Keep Your Car Reliable

Burke View Garage in Lyndonville, VT, explains why spring maintenance should go beyond just an oil change.

Spring makes many drivers think of one thing first: the next oil change. That is a good start, but it is usually not enough. By the time winter is over, your car has already been through cold starts, rough roads, temperature swings, dirty slush, and months of extra stress on the battery, tires, brakes, and suspension.

That is why spring service should be looked at as a reset, not a single item on a checklist.

Why Spring Is When Hidden Wear Starts Showing Up

Winter wear has a way of staying quiet until the weather softens up. A weak battery may have barely made it through cold mornings. Tires may have lost tread or pressure little by little. Brakes and suspension parts may have taken more abuse than you realized from potholes, road salt, and rough pavement. Once spring arrives, those problems do not disappear. They just become easier to ignore.

This is where a lot of avoidable trouble begins. The car feels better because the weather is easier, so drivers assume the hard season is behind them. In reality, spring is usually when it makes the most sense to look closely at what winter left behind.

Tires, Brakes, And Steering Deserve A Closer Look

If there are a few systems that should never be carried into a new season without attention, it is these. Tires may have uneven wear, lower tread than expected, or damage from winter roads.

Brakes may still stop the car, but squeaking, vibration, or a softer pedal feel should not be ignored just because the roads are finally dry

           .

Steering and suspension need the same kind of attention. If the car pulls, clunks over bumps, or feels looser than it did a few months ago, spring is the right time to get ahead of it. An inspection here is worth doing early, because tire wear and front-end wear tend to get more expensive once they start feeding into each other.

Fluids Do More Work Than Most Drivers Realize

Spring maintenance should include more than just fresh oil. Coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and washer fluid all play a role in how reliable the vehicle feels once longer drives and warmer temperatures return. If one of those is low, old, or contaminated, it usually does not stay a small issue for very long.

Coolant is a good example. A car may have made it through winter without any issues, but that does not mean the cooling system is ready for warmer weather. Brake fluid is another one people forget until the brake feel starts changing. Keeping up with fluid service is one of the easier ways to avoid being caught off guard later in the season.

Battery, Belts, And Hoses Should Not Be Seasonal Surprises

A weak battery often gets blamed on winter, but spring is usually when the aftereffects show up. A battery that struggled in cold weather does not suddenly become healthy just because the temperature rises. The same goes for belts and hoses that have been aging quietly under the hood.

A few smart spring checks include:

            Battery strength and charging performance

Belt condition and any chirping or cracking

Hose condition and signs of swelling, seepage, or age

Coolant level and visible cooling system leaks

These are the kinds of things we like to catch before they turn into a no-start, an overheating problem, or a roadside repair that could have been avoided.

Visibility And Cabin Comfort Still Count

Spring service is not just about what keeps the car moving. It should cover what keeps you comfortable and aware behind the wheel. Wipers that streaked all winter are not going to become better in spring rain. Washer systems that barely sprayed in cold weather are still not helping much now. Headlights, brake lights, and turn signals should be checked too, especially if you have not walked around the vehicle in a while.

This is a good time to think about the A/C as well. A system that feels acceptable in cool weather can feel weak very quickly once warmer days show up. If airflow is poor, the air is not cooling properly, or there is a musty smell when you switch it on, it is easier to deal with now than during the first hot stretch of the year.

Spring Maintenance Is Really About Reliability

The biggest reason spring service goes beyond oil changes is simple: reliability depends on the whole car, not one fluid. Most vehicles that end up needing larger repairs in late spring or summer were already showing smaller signs earlier. A little attention in spring usually means fewer surprises later, and that is a much better way to head into a new season.

Regular maintenance works best when it is timed around how the vehicle is actually being used. After winter, that means checking what was stressed, what is wearing, and what needs service before the next stretch of heavier driving begins.

We are so close to actual spring here in VT—you can almost taste it! Along

with spring comes mud season, but I bet we'll all be happy to see something other than snow after the winter we just had. Spring for us also brings baseball, which is one of our most favorite times of the year. Being outside all of the time, with both of our boys playing for Lyndon Institute this year, and Rory back coaching, it's bound to be a fun spring. If you find yourself with some free time, check out the LI baseball schedule and come check out a game. You're certain to hear me cheering somewhere on the sidelines and most likely doing the book!

If you live on a back road or travel along them throughout March or April and start to feel a shake, you may have some mud-caked tires. Call us to make an appointment to put it up on the lift to be sure. We're happy to clean the wheels out for you and make sure the shake isn't coming from anywhere else. Many times you'll feel the tell-tale mud shake at higher speeds. And while your vehicle is here for a mud clean out, we'll do our comprehensive digital vehicle check that comes with a full color report! This digital vehicle inspection report is complimentary. If we find anything else that needs to be address, our service advisors will reach out with a full quote and time frame to get those fixed for you in a timely fashion. Make sure you save us as a contact in your phones when the text of the report gets sent out. That way we won't end up in spam, and you can get a good look at how your vehicle is doing. We're also happy to email these reports out!

How To Find Out If the Car's Cooling System Has A Leak

Burke View Garage in Lyndonville, VT, explains how to check for cooling system leaks and how technicians pinpoint the source.

This is a subtitle for your new post

Coolant leaks can be sneaky. You might never see a puddle, yet the reservoir level keeps dropping, and the heater starts acting a little inconsistent. In many cases, coolant is escaping only when the system is hot and pressurized, then drying before it ever hits the ground.

The goal is to confirm whether you actually have a leak, then narrow down where it is coming from. A few simple checks can point you in the right direction, and they can also help you avoid driving the car when the coolant level is too low.

Why Coolant Leaks Can Be Hard To Spot

Cooling systems are designed to run under pressure. That pressure raises the boiling point, which helps the engine manage heat in traffic and on long drives. The downside is that weak seals and tiny cracks often leak only under those pressurized conditions, then stop when the engine cools down.

Coolant can also leak onto hot parts and evaporate instantly. You may only notice a faint sweet smell after you park, or

a light crusty residue near a hose connection

. That is why a leak can be real even if your driveway stays perfectly clean.

Quick Clues Before You Start Chasing Parts

Start with patterns. Does the level drop faster after highway driving, long idles, or hot days? Does the heater blow cooler at stoplights but warmer once you are moving? Those details can help narrow whether the system is low, pulling in air, or losing coolant under load.

Also, pay attention to any new residue or smells. A sweet odor after shutoff, foggy windows that seem harder to clear, or a wet spot under the front of the car after a long drive are all worth noting. This is also one of those problems that regular maintenance can catch early, before the leak becomes large enough to cause overheating.

Check The Coolant Level The Safe Way

Only check the coolant when the engine is cold. Do not remove a radiator cap on a hot engine, because the system can be under pressure and can spray hot coolant. If your vehicle uses a reservoir with MIN and MAX markings, use those as your reference points.

If the level is below the MIN line, top it off with the correct coolant mix and keep track of how quickly it drops again. Write down the mileage and the amount you added. If you are adding coolant repeatedly, that is a strong sign you need the leak located instead of continuing to top off and hope it stabilizes.

Look For These Common Leak Locations

Most external coolant leaks show up around connections, seals, and plastic parts that see constant heat cycling. Look for crusty residue, dampness, or an area that stays cleaner than the dusty surfaces around it. That clean track is often where coolant has been washing dirt away.

Common leak spots include the radiator end tanks and seams, the upper and lower radiator hoses, the heater hoses near the firewall, the thermostat housings, and the coolant outlet flanges. Water pumps can leak from the seal area, and you may see residue on nearby parts or a damp trail below the pump. If you have an undertray, coolant may collect on it and drip from a completely different spot than the actual source.

Pressure Testing And Dye: How Shops Confirm A Leak

If the leak does not show itself in your driveway, pressure testing is the most reliable next step. The system is pressurized with the engine off so the leak can appear without engine heat blowing everything around. That makes it easier to spot a slow seep at a hose clamp, a hairline crack in a plastic housing, or a weeping pump seal.

UV dye can also help when leaks are tiny or hidden. Dye is added to the coolant, then a UV light reveals the leak trail, even if it is small enough to evaporate quickly. We’ve seen leaks that looked impossible to find until dye revealed a clear path along a hose junction or a seam that opened only under pressure.

When The Leak Is Not External

Sometimes the cooling system is losing coolant without any visible external seepage. In those cases, pay attention to subtle signs like persistent steam from the exhaust after warm-up, repeated bubbling in the reservoir, or a heater that goes warm-cool-warm as you drive. Another clue is coolant that looks oily or a dipstick that looks unusually milky, although many engines will not show that clearly, even with a problem.

This is not a reason to panic, but it is a reason to stop topping off endlessly and get the system checked. Coolant loss is manageable when caught early, and it is much harder on the engine when it is ignored until the temperature gauge starts climbing.

We hope you've been enjoying a great start to the New Year, it's still hard to believe we're in 2026 already! Rory and I have been enjoying many high school basketball games traveling all around VT and cheering on our Vikes. It is so much fun to watch our youngest in his element, we can't wait to see where he and his teammates go throughout their high school careers!

Our oldest son went on a trip of lifetime in January to Italy, Greece, and Rome with Lyndon Institute, he had many pinch me moments! The fact that our high school offers such an opportunity is incredible, we couldn't be happier for him to experience this. Many people dream to travel to these places (myself still included) and he just had the best time with some of his bestfriends! We feel blessed that he and all of the other trip goers were able to travel safely and be safe throughout their amazing journey!

Why Are SUVs More Expensive To Maintain?

Burke View Garage in Lyndonville, VT, explains why SUVs can be more expensive to maintain, focusing on tire costs, suspension loads, and drivetrain service needs.

SUVs are popular for good reasons. They sit higher, carry more people and gear, and often feel safer and more comfortable on rough roads. The part many drivers do not expect is that the same traits that make SUVs appealing can also raise the cost of keeping them in good shape.

Higher maintenance costs are not always about fancy badges or luxury options. A lot of it comes down to weight, tire size, drivetrain complexity, and how hard SUVs work in everyday driving.

Once you know where the costs come from, you can usually plan smarter and avoid the worst surprises.

Extra Weight Means Faster Wear On Consumables

SUVs are heavier than many sedans, and weight affects almost everything that wears out. Brakes have to work harder to slow the vehicle down, and that can mean pads and rotors wear faster, especially in stop-and-go traffic. Tires also take more load, which can increase heat and speed up wear, particularly if alignment is even slightly off.

Suspension parts feel it too. Bushings, ball joints, and wheel bearings carry more stress over bumps and turns. That does not mean an SUV is fragile, it just means the wear curve can be steeper if maintenance is delayed.

Tires Cost More And They Are Less Forgiving

SUV tires are usually larger, and bigger tires usually cost more. Many SUVs also use higher load-rated tires, and those can be pricier than standard passenger tires. If the SUV has larger wheels and low-profile tires, pothole damage can be more common and replacements can sting.

Tires are also less forgiving when something is slightly wrong. A small alignment issue that a sedan could tolerate for a while may chew up SUV tires quickly because the load is higher. Rotations and alignment checks are not glamorous, but they often pay for themselves in tire life.

           AWD And 4WD Add Complexity

Many SUVs come with AWD or 4WD, and that adds components and fluid services that a front-wheel-drive sedan does not have. You may have a rear differential, a transfer case, and additional driveline parts that need attention over time. When those systems are neglected, the repairs can get expensive.

There is also a tire matching factor. On many AWD systems, mismatched tire sizes or uneven tread depth can stress the drivetrain. That is why tire replacement strategy matters more on an SUV, and why rotating regularly is a cost-control move.

More Suspension, More Features, More Things To Maintain

SUVs have more suspension travel and more hardware to control body movement

. Some models add air suspension, adaptive dampers, or other comfort features that improve ride but also add maintenance and repair costs as the vehicle ages. Even when the SUV is not a luxury model, larger brakes, bigger hubs, and more substantial suspension parts can still cost more.

Safety and comfort tech can be part of the equation too. Driver-assist systems rely on sensors and calibration, and a simple windshield replacement or alignment service can sometimes involve extra steps. None of this is a reason to avoid SUVs, it is just part of the ownership math.

Driving Style And Use Case Hit SUVs Differently

SUVs often get used harder than people admit. They haul kids, carry cargo, tow trailers, and spend time on rough roads or gravel. Even without towing, short trips and idling can stress engines and cooling systems over time.

Add city traffic and potholes, and suspension and tires take a beating

           .

A cost-smart approach is matching maintenance to use. If you tow, drive in mountains, or sit in heavy traffic, fluid services and inspections may need to happen sooner than the generic schedule suggests. The SUV is doing more work, so it needs more attention to stay reliable.

A Practical Plan To Keep Costs Under Control

You cannot change the laws of physics, but you can control the big cost drivers. Stay consistent with tire rotations and keep alignment in check, because tires are one of the largest recurring expenses. Address small suspension noises early, since a simple bushing or link can turn into a tire-wearing problem if ignored. Keep up with fluid services for AWD or 4WD components so you are not paying for driveline repairs later.

Here are habits that tend to pay off on SUVs:

Rotate tires on schedule and replace them as a matched set when needed

Watch for uneven wear and handle alignment issues early

Keep brakes inspected before metal-to-metal contact happens

Follow drivetrain fluid service intervals if equipped with AWD/4WD

Fix small leaks early so fluids do not get low and cause bigger damage

Most SUV ownership gets cheaper when maintenance is proactive, not reactive.

Here we are again, at the beginning of a bright and shiny new year. We hope you are all looking forward to a fresh start and that 2026 is everything you need it to be!

Here we are again, at the beginning of a bright and shiny new year, hoping for the best for everyone. 2025 was filled with so much: we learned, we grew, we did amazing and fun things, and we got through any lows we experienced together as a team; it was certainly one for the books!

At BVG we're starting the year off with our great, loyal team and can't wait to see what we can all do together this year. We have some lofty goals for 2026, confident that we can accomplish them all with the tight-knit family we have here. Do you have any goals for this year? We'd love to hear about them the next time you stop by the shop!

We are currently chasing our youngest and his JV basketball team around the state, having so much fun cheering them all on. It's a great group of boys to watch. If we aren't at the shop odds are good that we're in the stands cheering LI on. Many of our team members have kiddos on sports teams so they're doing the same when they're not in the shop too! If you have a chance to catch an LI game this season, we highly recommend it!

And last, but not least, with the cold VT winter weather we want to remind you all to have your batteries tested and your vehicles checked over for winter to ensure you aren't stranded anywhere in inclement weather. Preventative maintenance is key up here in the North and we're always happy to do it! Our full comprehensive digital vehicle inspections will ensure that you are ready for anything and we send these full reports out to every customer for every vehicle for easy review. Be sure to save us in your phones as a contact to make sure you get the report when we send it and call with any questions, our service advisors are always happy to chat!

We hope you are all looking forward to a fresh start and that 2026 is everything you need it to be!

           All the Best,

5 Most Common Problems That Prevent Your Car From Starting In the Morning

Burke View Garage in Lyndonville, VT, explains five common problems that keep cars from starting in the morning.

You head out in the morning, turn the key or push the button, and instead of a quick start you get clicking, slow cranking, or nothing at all. The night before, everything seemed fine. Morning starting problems are frustrating because they always seem to happen when you are in a hurry.

The good news is that most of these issues come down to a handful of common causes that we see over and over again.

           1. Weak or Aging Battery

The most common culprit for a car that will not start in the morning is a tired battery. Overnight, the battery cools down, and cold temperatures reduce its ability to deliver current. A battery that is just strong enough in the afternoon may struggle first thing in the morning, especially after a cold night.

You might notice slower cranking over several days, dim interior lights when you start, or a need to jump-start more often. Batteries typically have a useful life of a few years, depending on climate and driving habits. Short trips, lots of accessories, and extreme heat or cold can all shorten that life and bring on early morning trouble.

Some habits can push a marginal battery over the edge sooner. Leaving phone chargers, lights, or aftermarket accessories plugged in overnight can draw power while the car is parked.

If the alternator is not quite keeping up, the battery

never gets fully recharged and each morning start gets a little harder.

           2. Corroded or Loose Battery Connections

Even a healthy battery cannot do its job if the power cannot get out

. Corrosion on the terminals or loose clamps can create enough resistance that the starter does not receive full power. That often shows up as a single click or a brief attempt to crank, then silence.

In the morning, when everything is cold and metal has contracted slightly, a marginal connection is more likely to act up. You might see white or blue crust around the posts, or notice that the cables can move if you twist them by hand. Cleaning and tightening those connections safely is a simple fix that sometimes makes an immediate difference.

           3. Starter Motor or Solenoid Problems

If the battery and connections are in good shape, the starter motor or its solenoid is the next suspect. The starter is the heavy duty electric motor that turns the engine over to get it running. As it wears, internal contacts can pit or stick, and the motor can lose strength.

Common signs include a single loud click with no cranking, intermittent starting trouble where the car fires up on the second or third try, or a grinding sound if the starter gear is not engaging correctly. Morning is often when these problems show up most clearly, because you are starting from a completely cold state after many hours of sitting. Once the engine has been started and the parts are warm, the starter may behave better for the rest of the day.

           4. Fuel Delivery Issues

If the starter spins the engine normally, but it simply will not catch, the problem may be on the fuel side. A weak fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or leaking fuel pressure regulator can let pressure bleed down while the car sits overnight. In the morning, the system has to work harder to build enough pressure for a clean start.

You may notice longer cranking before the engine fires, or that it starts and then stalls once or twice before settling into a smooth idle. In some cases, the car starts fine the rest of the day because the fuel system does not have as much time to lose pressure between trips. Our technicians often check fuel pressure both at key on and while cranking when we are chasing a first-start-of-the-day complaint.

           5. Ignition or Sensor Problems

Modern engines rely on a mix of ignition parts and sensors to time the spark correctly. Worn spark plugs, failing ignition coils, or crank and cam sensors that are starting to drift can all make an engine reluctant to fire when it is cold. Once it has run a bit and warmed up, those parts may perform better, which is why the problem seems to vanish by lunchtime.

You might feel the engine catch and stumble, misfire for a few seconds, then smooth out. Sometimes a check engine light will store misfire or sensor codes even if it is not on all the time. We often see this on vehicles that are past due for spark plug service or that have had a minor performance issue ignored for a while.

Simple Checks You Can Safely Try at Home

There are a few basic checks you can do without tools that give useful clues before you bring the car in. None of these replaces proper testing, but they can help you describe what is happening.

Watch and listen when you try to start: do you hear clicking, slow cranking, or no sound at all.

Look at your interior and dashboard lights while cranking: if they go very dim or fade out, that points toward a battery or connection issue.

Pop the hood and visually inspect the battery: check for a swollen case, heavy corrosion, or loose clamps.

Pay attention to patterns: is the problem worse after cold nights, after the car sits for several days, or only after short trips?

Sharing those details gives us a head start on whether we should focus on the battery and cables, the starter, or the fuel and ignition systems. It also helps us spot issues that may be related, like an occasional stall or rough idle after it does eventually start.

Owner Habits That Make Morning Starting Problems More Likely

Everyday routines can quietly set the stage for trouble. Lots of short trips with the lights, heater, and electronics running give the alternator very little time to recover what the starter used. Letting minor hard start symptoms go for months instead of mentioning them turns small issues into larger ones.

Using old, worn keys in traditional ignitions or ignoring intermittent check engine lights can also play a part. We have seen many cars where addressing a simple tune-up item or fixing a small parasitic draw early would have prevented those stressful mornings when the car would not start.

           Happy Holidays Everyone!

Can you believe we're already at the end of 2025? What a year this has been, definitely a very wild ride! This year has been full of ups and downs for us, thankfully the frequency of ups was much higher, and we were once again reminded of the support we are surrounded by when going through it all. We've learned a lot from the downs, grew quite a bit, and came out on the other side even stronger than before.

This year saw our boys hitting some big milestones: our oldest getting his license and our youngest getting his driving permit (two drivers at once!), also trying out new sports and navigating high school in general. It is an absolute honor to watch our wonderful boys grow, bittersweet at times because they aren't our tiny little babies anymore and really enjoying hanging out with our teens who have turned out to be some of the funniest people we know.

We purchased a brand-new home this year and completed our journey with the FEMA flood buyout with our previous one. This entire process was long, arduous, bittersweet, and taught us many life lessons. Our old home was where our boys spent most of their childhood filled with so much love and so many memories, we will miss it dearly. But, we are also incredibly happy with our new home and ready to begin our next chapter there as a family. What a wild ride this whole thing was and what a cool thing to celebrate it all with our first Christmas in our beautiful new place!

The shop has had so much growth this year! We have expanded on the services we offer, including some high-quality BG services that are worth every bit of investment! Our team has really shown up for each other time and time again, continuing to provide top-notch service. We are so excited to see where 2026 takes us!

So, as we turn the page on this last chapter of 2025, we wish you all the best start to the new year and hope it is filled with everything you need it to be!

How to Tell If Your Car Needs New Shocks or Struts

Burke View Garage in Lyndonville, VT, explains how to tell when shocks or struts are worn out and no longer controlling the vehicle properly.

When shocks and struts are doing their job, the car feels settled and predictable over bumps and in corners. As they wear out, the ride changes slowly, so you may get used to extra bounce or body roll without realizing it. If the vehicle starts to feel loose, busy, or harsh, that is often your first clue that these parts are getting tired.

What Shocks and Struts Do for Your Car

Shocks and struts control how quickly the suspension moves, so the tires stay in steady contact with the road. The springs hold the vehicle up, while the dampers calm the body after every bump and turn. Inside, fluid and valves resist motion and turn it into heat. When that internal hardware wears out or leaks, the wheels can hop and the body can sway more than it should, which makes the car feel unsettled and harder to keep in a straight line.

Everyday Driving Signs Your Shocks Are Getting Weak

Most drivers notice subtle changes long before anything is obviously broken. A common complaint is that the car feels busier than it used to, with more body movement over rough pavement. The vehicle may take an extra moment to settle after a dip or speed bump, or the front end may dive more under braking. You might also see the rear squatting more when you accelerate, or feel the body lean more in curves and recover slowly as you straighten out.

A couple of simple checks can give you a rough idea of shock and strut condition. With the vehicle parked, press down firmly on one corner of the bumper, then let go and watch what happens.

A healthy suspension should come back up and settle in about one cycle

, not keep bouncing several times. On the road, the body should take one clean motion after a dip or expansion joint and then feel planted again.

If it keeps bobbing or feels like it is floating instead of settling, the dampers are likely getting tired.

Worn shocks and struts often make themselves heard as well as felt. Some of the noises that show up include:

These sounds can come from other suspension parts too, which is why a lift inspection matters. When we check a noisy suspension, we look at strut mounts, shock bushings, and nearby components together so we do not miss a related issue.

Tire Wear and Braking Changes You Should Watch For

Because shocks and struts help keep the tires planted, their condition shows up in tire wear and braking behavior. If the tires start to show cupping or scalloped patterns, especially on the front, it may be a sign that they are bouncing instead of staying glued to the road.

You might also feel the vehicle take longer to stop, or

, because the wheels are losing contact at just the wrong time. In sudden maneuvers, a car with weak dampers can lean more and feel less stable even if the brakes themselves are in good shape.

How to Help New Shocks and Struts Last

Once new shocks or struts are installed, a few simple steps can help them deliver a long, quiet life. Getting an alignment at the same time keeps the wheels pointed where they should be and prevents the suspension from fighting itself.

Rotating tires on schedule and keeping pressures correct lets the new parts work smoothly instead of constantly chasing irregular tread.

It also helps to slow down a little for known rough sections of road, which protects the dampers and the rest of the suspension and steering as well.

The "ber" months are always my absolute favorite, the weather, the feel, the holidays, the extra time we get to spend with friends and family, it's just the best! We've been lucky enough to have absolutely beautiful fall weather here in VT, and finally got some much needed rain in October. The fall vibes were strong and the foliage was some of the prettiest we've seen in years. What a great place to be!

We enjoyed traveling and watching our oldest son in his first Cross Country season for LI. Cheering him on, along with our friend's kids, his other friends/teammates, and enjoying the truly cheerful, encouraging atmosphere that this sport has. It was such a treat watching him come into his own with this new to us sport and really enjoying it. They couldn't have had better weather and we got to enjoy the fall foliage even more in our travels to these meets, with some of the prettiest locations we've ever experienced with any sport. Basketball will be starting soon for our youngest and we'll find ourselves court side cheering them all on!

We're thankful for our incredible family and friends. We're thankful for our prospering business, along with our fantastic team and wonderful customers. We're thankful for our recent move out of the flood zone and into the home we have dreamed of for many years. Thankful for the the strong and resilient community that we live in. And we're thankful for each other and the beautiful life we have.

How Does Regular Brake Work Make Winter Driving Safer And Less Stressful?

Burke View Garage in Lyndonville, VT, shares how routine brake maintenance helps you stay safe and confident on icy roads all winter long.

Vermont winter driving asks a lot from your brakes. Cold temperatures, wet roads, salt, and packed snow increase stopping distances and make small brake issues feel bigger. The most reliable way to stay calm on icy mornings is to ensure your braking system is in good working condition before the first storm and to maintain it throughout the season.

Regular service does more than stop squeaks. It protects parts from corrosion, keeps the pedal feel consistent, and helps anti-lock braking work as designed.

Why Winter Magnifies Small Brake Problems

Cold air thickens fluids, and road spray coats parts with slush and salt. If slide pins are dry, calipers cannot move freely, and the pads do not clamp evenly. That shows up as a pull during stops or a pad that drags and overheats. Moisture in old brake fluid lowers its boiling point and encourages internal corrosion, so downhill braking into town can feel spongy after a few hard applications.

Routine inspections and timely fluid exchanges prevent these winter stress points from piling up on the same day.

Pads, Rotors, and Even Contact Matter More on Slick Roads

The tire and the road decide the final grip, but even braking force helps the tires use what grip they have. Worn or glazed pads and rotors with uneven thickness create pulses in the pedal. On ice, that pulsing can upset weight transfer and lengthen stops. Fresh, bedded pads and rotors with a correct surface finish provide the ABS with a stable platform, allowing it to cycle smoothly without harsh vibration.

The result is steadier deceleration and a steering wheel that stays calm while you focus on the lane.

ABS and Stability Control Work Best with Healthy Hardware

Electronic assists do not generate friction; they manage it. Anti-lock braking needs consistent hydraulic pressure and accurate wheel speed readings. If a wheel speed sensor is rusty or the tone ring is cracked, the system can misread a skid and pulse at the wrong moment. A seasonal check catches damaged harnesses, corroded connectors, and debris packed around sensors from gravel roads.

When the system sees clean signals and the hydraulics respond quickly, you feel shorter, straighter stops without drama.

Brake Fluid Service: Small Investment, Big Winter Benefit

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time. In summer, you may not notice the difference, but in January, that moisture can boil during repeated braking or freeze around caliper pistons after a night outside. Either scenario hurts pedal feel. A complete fluid exchange replaces the old fluid with fresh, dry fluid that resists fade, protects internal passages, and keeps seals happy.

Pairing a fluid service with pad and rotor work gives you a clean baseline for the season.

Salt, Corrosion, and the Case for Cleaning and Lubrication

Road salt saves lives on steep, shaded hills, but it is hard on brakes

. It creeps into pad brackets and builds a crust that locks pads in place. The pad then wears in a taper, and the brakes grow noisy. Regular winter maintenance includes removing the pads, cleaning bracket channels, replacing tired hardware, and lubricating slides with the correct high-temperature brake grease.

This basic housekeeping step prevents uneven wear and restores quiet operation that lasts beyond the next snowstorm.

If any box is unchecked, a short visit now is much better than a tow later.

How Regular Service Reduces Stress Behind the Wheel

Confidence matters when roads are patchy and visibility changes by the mile. A quiet, firm pedal and a car that stops straight reduce mental load on long drives to the mountain or early morning commutes on Route 5. You spend less time guessing whether a noise is harmless and more time looking ahead.

Regular service also cuts down on last-minute emergencies, since worn pads, stuck slides, and old fluid are found and fixed on your schedule, not on the shoulder during sleet.

What to Expect During a Professional Winter Brake Visit

A thorough visit starts with a road test to feel pulsation, pulling, or noise. With the wheels off, the technician measures pad thickness, rotor runout, and rotor thickness variation. Caliper slides are removed, cleaned, and relubricated, hoses are checked for cracking or swelling, and the condition of the fluid is verified.

If rotors need replacement, the new parts are matched to the vehicle’s weight and intended use, not just the lowest price. After reassembly, the brakes are bedded properly so the first snowy stop feels predictable rather than grabby.

September Manager's Minute

I know many of you are sad to see summer go, but honestly the fall is our very favorite time of year and we're so excited to have it right around the corner!

Happy September & Back To School Everyone!

This year is just flying by, we can't believe the summer has all but come and gone!

Both of our boys will be in high school this year which feels like such a wild thing to type out. We are just so proud of them both and can't wait to see how they soar this year. It's a very bittersweet feeling, our hearts are full but we're also reminded of how much older they are which makes us just a little sad too. I'm sure there are many of you who can relate!

Many of our techs have kiddos also going back to school, just starting school, or about to have their very first kiddo. It's really an exciting time of year for us all! On that note, here is a friendly reminder to be mindful of buses stopping to pick up and drop off children again, to always be on the lookout for them so everyone stays safe. The same for our emergency services, if we all work together our little community will be as safe as it can possibly be.

This is also the time of year to think about undercoating, Mike's filling slots from now until the end of October so be sure to call to get all of your vehicles on his list before he fills up!

It would also be a good idea to start thinking about winter prep and when you want to get your snow tires on. We always fill up, going from one week out to up to 4 weeks out for an appointment during tire season so its always a good idea to call early and get your appointment in!

           Happy Summer!

We've managed to see some actual sun here in VT, it's amazing what a little vitamin D can do to morale. We hope you've been able to soak up every bit of it you possibly could!

We've been enjoying some extra family time these past few weeks, not revolving around any kind of sport, and it's been absolutely rejuvenating. Rory's been getting some good fishing hours in on his boat throughout the NEK, the boys have been enjoying sleeping in and getting some solid vegging time with buddies, and I've been devouring some really awesome books inside and outside on the front porch swing.

The shop has been nice & busy, if you've gone by you'll see those bay doors open with our guys working hard all day long. We've served a lot of people in the last few weeks and gotten many cars ready for road trips and hot weather. All that hard work was rewarded with a 4-Day holiday weekend where we all got to celebrate Independence Day with loved ones. And there was actual good weather to boot!

With the holiday this month, we want to take a moment to thank of all of those in service, who have served in the past, and their families. We are eternally grateful for your commitment and sacrifices. Please know how thankful we are and how much you are all loved.

We hope next month's letter finds you reading it on a beautiful sunny, not too humid day, hopefully from a beach somewhere.
